Which is the best unit for the money V-AFC, or SAFC ?
I'm not quite sure what the difference is between the two - is it absolutely necessary to have it tuned it on a dyno?

You have to go to the dyno. It's a useless fancy digital dislpay without tuning. And DON'T try tuning it "by the seat of your pants". You can break your motor.
Buy the VAFC. That way, if you ever need to sell it, you can sell it to anyone with a RS/LS (non-VTEC) or GSR (VTEC). It works fine on a non-VTEC car.

If you want actual HP gains... you must go to a dyno. Otherwise, you get a really cool display screen and most likely a bit of HP loss.
The V-AFC is a SAFC with a VTEC controller... so you decide which one is best for you.

Well, I'd have to disagree on tuning one without a dyno. I am currently working on mine bit by bit, using the J&S Safeguard to tell me when I've pulled too much fuel.

Holden, I 100% agree with that philosophy. I've been tweaking my Zdyne gold ECU with the J&S, the tach., the boost gauge, and most recently the DIY wideband display.
If you've got enough instrumentation, why spend $$$ at the dyno.
When I dyno'd my Civic in April, I had been tuning the motor by the instruments listed above (except the wideband, I was relying on an Autometer A/F gauge). At the dyno, I managed to find 5hp and a few ft./lbs. of torque. I had it dialed in pretty good for the "seat of my pants" tuning...
